Meet Our Team:

With the determination of a half-marathon runner, the empathy of a charity volunteer and organisational skills that are second-to-none, Kate Sloman is our Senior Administrator and a vital part of the inglis jane team. Here Kate explains how her positive attitude and precise eye for detail keep our operations running smoothly.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m very organised – you have to be when you’ve worked in office management and PA roles for 24 years. But I’m also very motivated and like to challenge myself inside and outside of work. I have earned qualifications in business administration and management studies, and recently completed my first half marathon, so I guess I must be quite determined too.

What are you passionate about?

Helping people to achieve. At work I like to ensure things run smoothly so that everyone else can concentrate on delivering on the things they are good at. Outside of work, I love fundraising and giving up my time to support good causes. In June 2017 I spent two weeks volunteering in a Mexican orphanage, which was hugely rewarding.

When did you join ij?

October 2017. Before that I’d worked in dentistry, construction and education – quite a mix!

What do you enjoy about working in administration?

I love the variety. One minute you can be raising a purchase order, sending a welcome email to a new contractor or updating a spreadsheet, the next you can be arranging an event or having a team meeting regarding important topics such as GDPR or security. I also like working in an environment that requires being organised, following set policies and procedures and dealing with people of all levels and backgrounds.

What are your typical tasks in a day?

My main role is to assist Susan Mace, the ij Operations Director, and stand in for her when required. I also manage the contractor lifecycle from on-boarding through to job assignment, invoicing and off-boarding, and this includes personal interaction with contractors and clients alike. I create invoices and check bills using the Xero accountancy system and assist in the creation of works orders. I also organise events, collate monthly reports, maintain spreadsheets and help set up payment runs.

What is the best thing about your job?

The people. Everyone says I have a positive attitude, and that I am a real people person. There are so many different personalities and characters and every day there is someone new to liaise with or get to know. 

What are the most challenging aspects about the role?
Getting contractors and consultants on-site by their agreed start date can be challenging but we always seem to manage it. Month-end is also challenging as there are tight deadlines to meet in terms of invoicing and reporting.

What was your biggest success with ij?

Covering for Susan when she went on a three-week holiday in March. I’d only been with the company five months and still had so much to learn about my role and the business. It was an extremely daunting prospect, however everything went well and I learnt a lot by being thrown in at the deep end. We have a real team ethic at ij. Everyone helps everyone out, and the team rallied around to ensure I succeeded.

What do you think makes ij different?

We really look after our contractors and consultants; that means we attract the best people and keep them. We are always contactable by phone and email and nothing is ever too much trouble for any of us. Every individual is treated as our absolute priority. Above all we’re ethical about the things we do; we keep things simple, fair and transparent for everyone.
